Storm Damage Roof Repair: What Should You Do After a Storm?

St. Louis weather can turn quickly, and strong winds, hail, and heavy rain can leave homeowners wondering whether their roof was damaged—even when everything looks fine from the ground.

The good news is that you don’t need to panic or immediately assume you need a new roof. What you do next matters, and taking a few sensible steps can help you figure out whether there’s actually a problem.

Here’s what to do after a storm rolls through and you’re concerned about your roof.

Roof with missing shingles after storm damage in St. Louis

1. Check Your Property From the Ground

Start by walking around your property and looking for obvious signs of storm damage. You may notice missing or lifted shingles, pieces of roofing material in the yard, damaged gutters, or debris that has hit the roof.

You can also look at the roof from the ground for areas that appear different than they did before the storm.

Most importantly, don’t climb onto the roof yourself. Storm damage can make a roof less safe to walk on, and some damage is difficult to identify without knowing what to look for.

2. Look Inside for Signs of Water

Not all storm damage is visible from outside. Take a look at your ceilings and, if you can safely access it, your attic for signs that water may be getting in.

Watch for new water stains, damp spots, dripping water, or wet insulation. Even a small amount of moisture can help point to an area of the roof that needs attention.

No signs of water? That’s a good thing, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the roof escaped the storm without damage. Wind and hail damage can sometimes be present before a leak develops.

3. Take Photos of Anything That Looks Damaged

If you notice damage around your property, take a few photos before anything is moved or repaired. This could include shingles or roofing material in the yard, damaged gutters or siding, fallen branches, or water stains inside your home.

You don’t need to document every square inch of the property. A few clear photos can give you a record of what things looked like immediately after the storm.

And again, take photos from the ground or another safe location. There’s no insurance claim on earth worth falling off a roof for.

4. Schedule a Storm Damage Roof Repair Inspection

Storm damage isn’t always obvious from the ground. Hail can damage shingles without knocking them off, and strong winds can loosen or lift shingles that may still appear to be in place.

A professional roof inspection can help determine whether there’s actual storm damage, how extensive it is, and whether the roof needs a repair or something more.

At Spartan Roofing & Construction, we’d rather tell you your roof looks fine than try to turn every storm into a replacement. If there’s damage, we’ll show you what we found and explain your options.

5. Understand the Damage Before Starting an Insurance Claim

If your inspection finds storm damage, take time to understand what was found before deciding what to do next. Not every damaged roof automatically needs a full replacement, and not every situation necessarily makes sense as an insurance claim.

If filing a claim is appropriate, your insurance company will typically send an adjuster to inspect the property and prepare an estimate based on the covered damage.

Spartan Roofing can help you understand the roofing portion of the process, review the insurance estimate with you, and meet with the adjuster when needed so the documented roof damage isn’t overlooked.

6. Make Temporary Repairs if Water Is Getting In

If the storm caused an active leak, the first priority is preventing additional damage inside your home. Move belongings away from the affected area and use buckets or containers to catch dripping water when it’s safe to do so.

A roofer may also be able to make a temporary repair or tarp a damaged area until a permanent repair can be completed.

Don’t attempt to tarp the roof yourself during or immediately after a storm. Wet roofing materials, wind, and hidden damage can make getting onto the roof especially dangerous.

7. Don’t Feel Pressured to Make a Decision Immediately

After a major storm, roofing companies can seem to appear overnight. You may have people knocking on your door, offering inspections, or telling you that you need to act immediately.

Unless you have an active leak or another issue that needs urgent attention, take the time to understand the condition of your roof and your options before signing anything.

Choose a local roofing contractor you’re comfortable with, ask questions, and make sure you understand what work is actually being recommended and why.
