Gutter Replacement St. Louis: 7 Signs You May Need New Gutters
Gutters aren’t exactly the most exciting part of your house—until they stop doing their job. Then suddenly you’re dealing with water pouring over the sides, puddles near the foundation, damaged fascia, or gutters that look like they’re trying to leave the house altogether.
The good news is that one problem doesn’t always mean you need an entirely new gutter system. Some issues can be repaired, cleaned, or corrected without replacing everything.
But there are also signs that your gutters have reached the point where replacement makes more sense. Here are seven things St. Louis homeowners should watch for.

1. Your Gutters Are Sagging or Pulling Away From the House
Gutters should sit securely along the roofline. If sections are sagging, leaning, or pulling away from the fascia, water may not be flowing toward the downspouts the way it should.
Sometimes the problem is as simple as loose or damaged hangers that can be repaired. But if the gutters themselves are bent, warped, or pulling away in several areas, replacement may make more sense.
Repair or replace? One loose section may be repairable. Sagging or separation throughout the gutter system can be a sign that it’s time for new gutters.
2. Water Is Pouring Over the Sides
When it rains, water should travel through the gutters and out through the downspouts—not spill over the edges like a tiny waterfall.
Overflowing gutters are often caused by leaves, debris, or a clogged downspout, so replacement isn’t always the answer. But gutters that are improperly pitched, undersized, damaged, or repeatedly overflowing even when they’re clean may need more attention.
Repair or replace? Start by ruling out a clog. If clean gutters still aren’t moving water properly, it may be time to have the system evaluated.
3. You See Cracks, Holes, or Leaking Seams
Small cracks or holes may not look like much when the weather is dry, but during a heavy rain they can allow water to escape before it ever reaches the downspout.
Leaks can also develop around seams and connections. A small isolated leak may be repairable, but multiple leaks throughout an older gutter system can become a sign that repairs are only buying a little more time.
Repair or replace? One small problem may be worth repairing. Cracks, holes, or leaks in several sections may make replacement the better long-term option.
4. Water Is Pooling Around Your Foundation
One of the main jobs of your gutter system is to move rainwater away from your home. If you regularly notice puddles, washed-out landscaping, or unusually wet areas near the foundation after it rains, your gutters or downspouts may not be directing water where it needs to go.
The problem could be a clogged downspout, poor gutter pitch, or a downspout that simply needs to discharge farther away from the house. But damaged or failing gutters can also be part of the problem.
Repair or replace? First figure out where the water is coming from. Sometimes a simple adjustment solves the problem; other times the gutter system needs more extensive work.
5. Your Fascia Is Showing Signs of Water Damage
Your gutters are attached along the fascia, so when water repeatedly gets behind or over the gutter system, the wood in that area can begin to show signs of trouble.
Peeling paint, staining, soft or deteriorated wood, or visible damage behind the gutters can all be clues that water hasn’t been moving away from the roofline properly.
Repair or replace? The source of the water problem needs to be identified first. Damaged fascia can often be repaired, but if failing gutters contributed to the problem, replacing them may help prevent the same damage from happening again.
6. Your Gutters Keep Coming Loose
If you’ve already had sections of gutter reattached or adjusted and they keep pulling loose again, there may be more going on than a bad hanger.
Older gutters can become bent or distorted, and damaged fascia can also make it difficult for the gutter system to stay securely attached. Repeatedly fastening the same problem area may only provide a temporary fix.
Repair or replace? An occasional loose hanger is usually repairable. If sections continue pulling away or the gutter itself has lost its shape, replacement may be the better solution.
7. You’re Constantly Fighting Leaves and Debris
Leaves, twigs, and other debris can quickly clog gutters and downspouts, causing water to back up and overflow. If you’re cleaning your gutters constantly—or they seem to clog again every time the wind blows—it may be worth looking at ways to reduce the maintenance.
This doesn’t necessarily mean you need new gutters. If your existing gutter system is still in good condition, gutter guards may be an option to help keep larger debris out while allowing rainwater to flow through.
Replace or add gutter guards? If the gutters themselves are still working properly, gutter guards may be all you need. If the gutters are already damaged, sagging, or failing, it may make more sense to replace the gutters and add guards at the same time.
